Councils, community groups, local residents and all sides of politics are united in our stance against the proposed offshore wind farm off the coast of Port MacDonnell.
I’ll be speaking out about this issue in Parliament next week.
This is a proposal that, if it goes ahead, will have major repercussions on the community and livelihoods of local residents.
Proponents of major projects in the Limestone Coast region must demonstrate community licence, which includes considered, comprehensive and transparent consultation with local residents.
Yet all the residents I have spoken to, including professional rock lobster fishermen, business owners and long-time locals, have not had their questions answered.
Similar to our concerns around fracking farmland, there are genuine concerns about the effects of an offshore windfarm on a valuable natural resource, which is a major economic and tourism driver for our region.
In March 2024, it was announced that the decision was made to remove South Australian waters from offshore wind zones through the power of our collaborative voice.
I would also like to highlight the work of Chris Carrison and the dedicated committee members that came together to form the Southern Coast Ocean Care, a dynamic group that worked together tirelessly to ensure the community's voice was heard.
A wonderful outcome for our Limestone Coast community.
