Thank a Firefighter

AHEAD of International Firefighters Day, on May 4, Member for Mount Gambier Troy Bell has thanked local firies for their service.

Speaking to a motion in parliament this week Mr Bell said it was important to reflect and acknowledge the people who risk their lives for their communities.

"Their impact obviously goes much beyond just fighting fires," he said.

"Not only do they rescue people from accidents but natural disasters and other hazardous situations that people forget about.

"In terms of exposure to different chemicals or unknown situations, it becomes quite a dangerous occupation." While highlighting the support offered by the state government for people in these positions, Mr Bell said Mount Gambier/ Berrin could be better protected.

He said the Mount Gambier Metropolitan Fire Service (MFS) Station was staffed by eight people instead of the recommended 12 and much of the equipment at the station was second hand.

"I have had recent discussions with Minister Szakacs, as well as the new minister, Minister Cregan, and I am pleased to report that meetings are in place for next Thursday with the MFS chief," he said.

"We need to get those full-time positions implemented and be proactive in our pursuits." He said providing up to date equipment was just as important as training and support to cope with the physical and emotional toll of their work.
