Finals fever is here

Friday September 08, 2023

FOR those involved in our local sporting community, September brings the arrival of finals fever.

It's a time when communities unite and lasting memories are made particularly for those lucky enough to be victorious.

It has always been one of my favourite times as it reflects some of the best parts of living in a regional town.

Grandparents, parents and children gather together to cheer on their local club, passing down their love of the game.

Mates catch up on the sideline as they watch their kids play.

It also isn't just about what happens on the field, finals fever serves as a catalyst for events and gatherings all over the region.

It's a great time for local businesses and community groups to get in on the action.

The canteen lines are long, the barbecues are bustling and the pubs are packed, and we wouldn't have it any other way.

It's been some years now since I have pulled on the boots and with South Gambier out of the Western Border football finals race, I can truly say I am an independent.

Whether it be hockey, soccer, netball or football; good luck to all the teams competing in finals this September and thank you to all the volunteers who dedicate countless hours to ensure these events run seamlessly.

Sporting clubs are built on volunteers, their valued sponsors and often run on a shoestring budget.

While everyone is focusing on their finals campaign, I encourage our clubs to look at next year and beyond.

The State Government Community Recreation and Sport Facilities Program is currently open with applications closing on the 25th of September.
