WHAT are your plans this January?

While some are travelling to visit friends and family, or taking a well-earned break by the beach, many of us - whether by choice or necessity - are staying closer to home.

But staying local doesn't mean you have to miss out on all the fun.

In fact, it's the perfect opportunity to be a tourist in your own town.

Gather your frineds or family, hop in the car, and spend a day exploring the hidden gems of Mount Gambier and its surrounds.

Start with Crater Lakes, arguably our most famous attraction.

While many have walked around the iconic Blue Lake, have you ventured a little further?

Climb the steps to Stephen Henty Lookout for breathtaking views, then take the lesser traveled Leg of Mutton trail for a picturesque hike.

Cap it off with a round of disc golf in the Valley Lakes - it's one of the best courses in the country.

Cool off with a refreshing dip in the Little Blue Lake, then drive 15 minutes to Caveton to discover the mysterious Hells Hole, a hauntingly beautiful sinkhole nestled in the forest.

For a change of scenery, head to the coast.

While visiting the beach, make time to stop by the Port MacDonnell Maritime Museum and Art Gallery for a mix of history and creativity.

Of course, you've probably visited the Umpherston Sinkhole, but have you been there at dusk to feed the possums?

Sometimes, the best adventures are right under our noses.

Embrace a staycation - you might be surprised by how much there is to appreciate and the best part, everything I've mentioned is free.
