MFS to seven days

The city of Mount Gambier is home to multiple major timber and milling operations which operate around the clock and house significant amounts of flammable materials.

Data provided by the Metropolitan Fire Service (MFS) showed there are around 20 facilities in the CBD classified at major risk of fire.

The MFS Mount Gambier station was only staffed during business hours and relied on retained staff for after hours call-outs.

An MFS staffing review undertaken in 2013 recommended a 7-day staffing roster be implemented immediately at the Mount Gambier station, reporting a full-time roster would vastly improve response times to residential and business fire emergencies.

Following his election, Troy lobbied the Emergency Services Minister to give the matter urgent consideration, in a campaign that lasted for more than three years.

In 2018, a 7-day staffing roster was implemented at the station, providing the city with greater surety and protection against fire emergencies.
